Birmingham & Fazeley Canal

The Birmingham & Fazeley Canal was completed in 1789 and the stretch from Farmer’s Bridge Junction, in the centre of Birmingham, to Fazeley is 15 miles long with 38 locks. The Birmingham & Fazeley actually continues to Whittington and this section is covered in the article on the Coventry Canal.

From the junction with the Coventry Canal the Birmingham & Fazeley runs south under the unusual Drayton Manor footbridge from where there is access to the theme park. Pleasant open countryside follows and the canal passes the extensive Kingsbury Water Park.

The canal runs parallel to the M42 motorway and passes under the M6 toll road then enters quieter surroundings at Curdworth. From thereon the canal runs through Minworth and the outskirts of Birmingham at Castle Vale – you should consider moving on to the centre of Birmingham rather than mooring here.

Continuing Westwards, the Birmingham & Fazeley reaches Salford Junction quite literally in the shadow of “Spaghetti Junction” and runs south through two sets of locks to Cambrian Wharf. There are several area with good moorings here, from where you can explore Birmingham city centre but the abundance of waterside pubs means it might be a little late before you can get a peaceful night’s sleep.
